Buy luxury vinyl plank when water is in the picture — kitchens, baths, basements, entries, or a household of spillers. Buy laminate when you want the most realistic wood look and feel per dollar in drier rooms — many laminates today are water-resistant (some fully waterproof), and their printed visuals and texture are outstanding. Plenty of homes sensibly use both.

What actually decides it
Moisture certainty. If there’s any chance of standing water — dishwasher line, dog bowl, kids’ bath — rigid-core LVP removes the worry entirely.
The specific product, not the category. A premium laminate outperforms a bargain vinyl, and vice versa. Wear layer thickness (vinyl) and AC rating plus water rating (laminate) tell the real story — we’ll decode the spec sheets with you.
Subfloor and transitions. Both float over most subfloors, but height, flatness, and where the floor meets tile or carpet can favor one over the other. Bring photos and we’ll flag anything tricky.
